A Family Shattered

Diogo married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, on June 22, 2025, in what should have been a joyful season. Just 11 days later, tragedy struck. The couple shared three young children, and now they are suddenly left without their father. André, who played for Penafiel in Portugal, was driving the rented Lamborghini Huracán when the vehicle veered off the A-52 highway, suffered a tyre blowout, burst into flames, and crashed.

After reflecting, the two brothers were identified by the authorities through personal possessions, as the car had been burned beyond recognition.

Official Tributes & Investigation

Liverpool FC described the loss as “Unimaginable” and asked for privacy as they supported Jota’s family. The club plans to immortalize his No. 20 shirt, though no official decision has been made to retire it permanently.

Investigators concluded that excessive speed and a tyre blowout caused the crash. It happened at about 00:40 local time when the vehicle, a rented Lamborghini Huracan, lost a rear tyre during the overtake.

The Prime Minister of Portugal, the Portuguese Football Federation, and UEFA sent messages expressing great condolences to the families and announced a minute of silence for upcoming international matches.

Legacy and Light

In addition to his success—like goals, awards, and stardom—Jota earns love and admiration from fans for his modesty, hard work, and infectious energy. Cristiano Ronaldo, Stephen Warnock, and most fans have praised him as a generous and gracious person. On and off the field, Jota is a sincerely caring person who comforts and helps others when they are in need.
