How Robin Ahn Reimagined Research Workflows Through Product Design

As R&D teams face an explosion of global research data, the challenge has shifted from access to usability. Platforms that aggregate patents, academic papers, and market intelligence often struggle to present that information in ways that are actually actionable. At Cypris, a research platform built for enterprise innovation teams, a significant product transformation focused on solving this exact problem. Led by Robin Ahn—serving as the company’s first and only in-house product designer—the effort centered on rethinking how complex datasets spanning 500M+ data points could be visualized and integrated into a single workflow. Rather than treating patents, papers, and monitoring as separate tools, the redesign connected them into a unified system where users move seamlessly between discovery, analysis, and reporting.

Bridging the Gap Between Data and Decision-Making

A core part of this work was the overhaul of the research papers and patents experience. For patents, the interface was redesigned to surface technical legal metadata—such as citations, patent families, and legal events—in a format that can be quickly scanned. For research papers, the experience emphasized structured summaries and contextual navigation. These changes, alongside redesigned side panels and saved search workflows, created a continuous system where insights are tracked and acted on without switching views.

The impact of this approach is reflected in user behavior, showing a strong alignment between interface and intent. Well over 90% of users who enter key experiences continue into active interaction, with a 98.6% initial engagement rate for Cypris Q and 93.8% for Projects. Feature adoption remains high, with approximately 30.7% of users engaging with saved searches and 14.99% creating projects, indicating deep adoption among power users. Following these redesigns, Cypris saw a 3.4× increase in average monthly platform engagement, with YoY session growth ranging from 2.6× to 4.1×.

The Rise of Cypris Q and Strategic Integration

The redesign also provided the foundational UI for Cypris’ AI workflows. Cypris Q, the platform’s AI research assistant, transitioned from minimal prior usage to thousands of interactions within a short period. By embedding AI directly into the research workflow, users reported an 80–90% reduction in “noise” during patent analysis. A critical addition to this ecosystem was the “Your Uploads” feature, which allowed users to integrate proprietary, customer-specific context directly into Cypris Q, enabling the AI to perform novelty checks and prior art analysis against both public and private data.

Industry Recognition and Award Significance

This body of work has been recognized across multiple major design award programs, reflecting its ability to handle complexity at scale. The project received three Silver Vega Digital Awards for Best UI, UX–Product, and UX–Communication. The Vega Digital Awards are an international competition that celebrates excellence in professional digital creative work, particularly focusing on the “future-forward” nature of digital products. The project also earned two Silver MUSE Creative Awards for Best User Experience. The MUSE Awards are one of the most prestigious global programs, known for a rigorous blind judging process that emphasizes innovative concepts and the ability of a design to push the boundaries of its industry.

Further validation came through a Silver w3 Award for Web Applications & Services. The w3 Awards are sanctioned and judged by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA), an invitation-only body of top-tier professionals from organizations like Disney, Wired, and Yahoo; they focus on honoring creative excellence on the web and the professionals behind it. Additionally, the work was shortlisted for Design Dispatch’s “Future Forward” Summer 2025 issue. Unlike traditional juried awards, this recognition represents a highly curated editorial selection that highlights emerging design trends and positions the work within global conversations on systems design and AI integration. Taken together, these honors demonstrate how connecting multiple systems—papers, patents, monitoring, and AI—can translate directly into measurable engagement and sustained product adoption.

Establishing a New Standard for Innovation Intelligence

Beyond these honors, the structural transformation led by Robin Ahn has redefined the Cypris platform from a discovery tool into a comprehensive “system of record” for innovation. This evolution is exemplified by the reimagined Projects module, which transitioned from a passive list into a collaborative research workspace. By introducing customizable workflows, role-based permissions, and a centralized item management system, the redesign enabled R&D teams to anchor, manage, and track complex initiatives in real time.

Combined with the “Your Uploads” infrastructure and the advanced reasoning capabilities of Cypris Q, these initiatives have created a high-trust, AI-powered ecosystem where global innovators can move from raw data to actionable intelligence with unprecedented clarity. Taken together, these milestones demonstrate how Robin Ahn’s deliberate product design has translated technical complexity into measurable commercial success and a lasting impact on the R&D industry.
